The Brief - A Special Birthday Necklace to Incorporate More Than One Generation of Gold

A beautiful challenge was presented to me, an eclectic mix of unworn gold collected by both Mum and Grandma to be worked into a special piece for a little girl coming to the right age for something really meaningful.
The idea immediately sprang to mind of my 'Keeper Pendants' which I've designed to hold charms within my collection in a sort of modern day charm necklace. Charms can then be added over the years and worn in many different combination.

My client also really liked my forget-me-not charms with birthstone centres.
As if by magic, we also had the perfect Ruby (for July) stones the perfect size for the job!
So I set about grouping together the gold to melt, extracting the stones carefully and popping them safely to one side.
One grouping was melted into an ingot to roll into wire for the keeper pendant while the other went into the crucible ready to pour into a delft clay mould of my hand carved forget-me-not.

The finished result is a beautiful contemporary interpretation of the gold and stones that will grow with it's owner and one day in the future, offer a little tangible connection back.
